Why Toy Hero?

We’re building Toy Hero to become the online home of toys in New Zealand.

Toy Hero has been created by the team behind Book Hero, New Zealand's online bookstore, trusted by more than 100,000 customers since launching in October 2024.

As Book Hero grew, so did our range of board games, puzzles and toys. We quickly realised they weren't being given a fair shot inside a bookstore and deserved their own place to shine.

So we built Toy Hero - a place dedicated to play, imagination and fun, while keeping everything our customers already love about Book Hero - overnight NZ-wide delivery, competitive prices, and exceptional customer service you can trust.

We’ve grown quickly to a team of 20, all based here in New Zealand, with a shared mission to make online shopping fast, reliable and genuinely fun again. Toy Hero is built on the same foundations, with the full backing of the Book Hero team. If you’re interested in our story, we’ve written a blog series called Book Hero’s Journey, where you can learn how we got started and how we’ve grown to where we are today.

At the heart of our new website, Toy Hero, is Tim Fulton, better known as Tim the Toy Man. Tim grew up in the golden era of toys - Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Star Wars, WWE - when toys were the bridge between the shows you loved and the worlds you created in your imagination. That passion never left, and there’s no one better to be leading a toy store.

As a kid growing up in the 80s, there was no Netflix or internet. If you wanted to watch a cartoon, you had to race home for TMNT on Channel 3 at 4pm, then spend the next hour on the phone talking about it with your mates. One of the week’s highlights was heading to the local video store, debating what to rent. You used your imagination for everything - building bases in paddocks or creating worlds with action figures. Today, that same mindset drives how I think about toys - not just as products, but as the starting point for creativity, imagination and play.
