The world has lost one of its most beloved actors, with Sir Patrick Stewart passing away at the age of 86 on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.
With a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Stewart was a true giant of stage and screen. From his early years with the Royal Shakespeare Company to becoming one of the most recognisable faces in science fiction, he brought some of film and television's most iconic characters to life.
For me, it's impossible to talk about 'Star Trek' or Marvel without Patrick Stewart's name coming up. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and Professor Charles Xavier in the 'X-Men' films, he became such an important part of the stories so many of us grew up loving.
And what an absolute icon he has been to so many people, across so many different stages of their lives! His impact on the world of science fiction, comic books and superheroes is extraordinary, but perhaps even more special is the connection generations of fans have felt to the characters he portrayed.
You only have to think about the endless references to him and his characters in sitcoms like 'The Big Bang Theory' to see just how deeply embedded he became in popular culture. He wasn't simply an actor playing beloved characters. He helped shape entire fandoms and became part of the lives of millions of people around the world.
From Shakespeare to 'Star Trek', 'X-Men' and beyond, what an extraordinary career and an incredible legacy to leave behind.
Rest in peace, Sir Patrick Stewart. 1940β2026.
