Description

Atua by Gavin Bishop is a visually stunning and meticulously researched compendium that introduces readers to the rich mythological tapestry of the Māori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand). This breathtaking, large-scale illustrated book is a treasure trove for children and adults alike, immersing them in the enthralling world of Māori gods, demigods, and heroes.

Beginning with the void of Te Kore—a state of nothingness—Atua takes readers on an enlightening journey through the cosmos, exploring the narratives that shaped the Māori worldview. From the Creation myth, where the primordial parents Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) were separated by their children to bring light into the world, to the epic tales of migration and adventure, each legend is brought vividly to life through Bishop's masterful storytelling and exquisite illustrations.

This compendium not only recounts traditional legends but also provides insightful commentary on the cultural and historical significance of these stories. Readers will meet key figures such as Tāne Mahuta, the deity of forests and birds, Māui, the demi-god known for his cunning and heroic feats, and many other captivating characters who play pivotal roles in Māori mythology.

As a testament to its literary and artistic excellence, Atua has garnered multiple awards:

  • Margaret Mahy Book of the Year 2022
  • Elsie Locke Award for Non-fiction 2022
  • Russell Clark Award for Illustration 2022

With its blend of fascinating stories, educational content, and breathtaking artwork, Atua offers a comprehensive introduction to the Māori pantheon and is an essential addition to any bookshelf. This once-in-a-generation publication is not just an educational resource but also an inspiring work of art that honours the rich cultural heritage of the Māori people.
