Let me start off by saying that I’m 100% not a board game person… in fact completely the opposite.. I have the attention span of a three year old & can’t sit still for very long… so historically board games & me don’t really get on…
The last board game I purchased was an old copy of the 90’s ‘Nightmare’ game with a VHS tape from an Op Shop 😂
So when a friend of mine recommended a board game called ‘Magical Athlete’ a few months ago my response was less than lukewarm ☹️
Bearing in mind of course that I’ve heard all about the big ‘guns’ in the board game world - the Catan’s / the Wingspan’s the Ticket to Ride’s etc names like these have been thrown around for the past couple of years - none of which looked even remotely appealing to me. Don’t get me wrong I want to be excited but I just know I won’t have the patience…
So when ‘Magical Athlete’ came onto the radar I was ready to throw it into the same metaphorical pile of ‘thanks but not for me’ 🙂
Fast forward a few months & Magical Athlete has been out of stock - due to its crazy popularity...
Now that Toy Hero is back in stock again (& I’m not afraid to say I do succumb to the odd bit of FOMO) so with a hesitant ‘sigh’ a copy of Magical Athlete was semi-reluctantly purchased by myself.
The verdict now that I’ve had it for a weekend.... WelI I’m glad to say I’m 100% into it & so is the whole family!
I’m not going to go into too much detail about the game play - but the rules are simple enough to learn (the QR code link to an instructional video is helpful) & the games last just long enough to remain interesting without being too long to be boring.
There is so much replay value in the way the characters are selected & the many choices of characters. The game pieces are also very visually appealing - made out of wood too.. no plastic here 🙂
We’ve only been playing with 3 players & having fun - but it looks like the more players there are the more chaotic it’s going to be, chaotic in a ‘every game is different’, great fun way.
This really is the game of the year for me & given it has been out of stock - a lot of other people too 🙂
It’s not super competitive, it’s not too serious & any arguments can be settled with the roll of a dice - no upturning Monopoly boards here 🤣
Highly recommend! Especially if you usually don't like board games!
