Scarface Claw, Hold Tight by Lynley Dodd is another delightful addition to the much-loved Hairy Maclary and Friends series. This rollicking picture book captures both the excitement and humour that fans have come to expect.
It’s a peaceful morning as Scarface Claw, the formidable and fearsome feline, dozes contentedly in a sunlit spot. His tail is neatly curled around him, and his feet are tucked in comfortably. Suddenly, the tranquility is shattered. A loud engine whirrs to life, sending vibrations through the ground.
In an instant, the truck begins to move, and with it, Scarface Claw, who is now precariously perched on the roof. As the truck speeds down the driveway and onto the streets, Scarface holds on for dear life. His owner, Tom, is completely oblivious to the rooftop passenger, even as passers-by frantically try to alert him to the stowaway kitty.
Inspired by true stories of cat owners inadvertently driving off with their pets still on the roofs of their cars, this adventure will have readers on the edge of their seats. The narrative is filled with plenty of close calls and hilarious moments, ensuring that young readers are just as engrossed in the unfolding drama as the bystanders aiming to rescue poor Scarface Claw.
As always, Lynley Dodd’s charming illustrations bring the story to vivid life, perfectly capturing Scarface’s mixed expressions of anxiety and determination. The rhythmic and rhyming text makes it an engaging read-aloud, promising giggles and gasps with every turn of the page.

About the Author
Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work.'
